They always deliver the best house music has to offer and the atmosphere is always good. Make sure you don’t miss Butch in a couple of weeks as it looks set to be going strong from early on.

Sunday Slow Jam

When I first heard ‘Darondo – didn’t I’ over a decade ago, I wasn’t sure if it was a man or a woman singing at first. On ‘Didn’t I’ he manages to piece together funk and soul seamlessly into a down tempo affair, reminiscent to that of Ron Isley and Al Green. He opened a show for James Brown back in the 70′s and released 3 singles but was never given the credit he deserved like others in his genre. All I know is this is a top 10 in my favourite summertime tracks.

Usher’s Climax is next on the cards. I know its old in terms of the internet, but it just keeps growing and growing on you. I hated this the first time I heard it and now I can’t stop listening to it, so don’t dismiss it just yet.

London Dirtybird BBQ

Written by . Filed under Night. Tagged . No comments.

About ten days ago London played host to a Dirtybird BBQ with a phenomenal line up of artists. It went from 3pm to 6am with an after party going from 6am to 12 noon on the Sunday, and I think I can speak for all when saying it was incredible, a sweat box, but incredible non the less. A mass of DJs/artists who weren’t even playing came down to scope the talent and get sweaty.
Here’s the first video of the night from Point blank, who will be posting up artist interviews shortly. Make sure you follow @SPLagency on twitter too, as they host some of the best parties around.

Loose Synths X Mimm

Written by . Filed under Night. Tagged , , , . No comments.

Our friends Loose synths are back this Saturday at Meter, formerly known as The C.A.M.P. Its free entry all night and goes on till 4am, so get down early, grab some food, and then drink yourself into a coma. This month the half German giant known as Spam Chop is playing, along side the Resident advisor one to watch, TOYC. He’ll be going back to back with Epworth, and the Loose synths residents Shooting Horses and Spokes polish things off.

If you want to know more on Spam Chop then simply Google him. What I will say quickly though is his height is matched by his production and DJ capabilities, and the Wigflex head honcho isn’t one to follow fads or trends. Ever since I met him about 6 years ago he was crafting his style of tech-house/techno/electronica, championing the independent scene, and turning up at places you never thought to check out sounds that interested him.

Finally You are probably wondering who MIMM are? Well, they are located in the heart of Hockley, Nottingham, and combine the worlds of fashion, art and music by pushing unique and individual clothing, audio/visual music events, art exhibitions, and a forward thinking record label. Make sure you check out their store here.

So we have a weird Frank Sinatra/Notorious B.I.G. mixtape this week. Like all album ‘mash ups’ that have come before, there are a couple of tracks that work well, and there are some that should have never been touched. Here’s a couple of tracks to give you an idea. You can download the full mix tape here

Justin Martin – Ghettos & Gardens

So Justin Martin has a debut album coming out soon and if this track is anything to go by it looks set to be another Dirtybird classic. I could go on to write a bit about the first releases from the album, but I’ll leave the Dirtybird PR team to fill you in on that, as its an amusing read:

“Ghettos & Gardens is the first single from Justin Martin’s debut artist album on dirtybird. The title describes the way this track rises up with beautiful sweeping melodies, almost to the point where you want to kiss the person next to you. But this epic euphoria can only last so long – it peaks with a bass line so tough, it’ll push you down a staircase, and then steal your bus pass.

Hood Rich starts with a cascade of voices tumbling over each other, clamoring for attention on the way to the club. Those bold proclamations give way to the melodious tones of a string ensemble that would be welcome in Yo-Yo Ma’s living room. And that’s just the first minute. All niceties aside, a hive of bass bees smashes against the far wall and explodes, leaving no doubt that every booty will be dropping like DAMN.”

Ante Perry – No Changes

Ante Perry teamed up with Tube & Berger and produced a new track. The new single comes with his typical big-ball-baselines, some powerful synths and a vocal that will even make the coolest guy shake his ass. My favourite is the remix by Bar25 resident ‘Dirty Doering’. The EP can be found on beatport when its released on April 18th.

Maayan Nidam – New Moon L.P.

Written by . Filed under House. Tagged , , . No comments.

Maayan Nidam’s second album New Moon has many different levels. Stylistically, the Berlin-based producer has created an 11-track collection of alternative electronic rhythms that combines everything from blissful broken beat, to surrealist electro, jazz-influenced moments, acidic house, exploratory techno, and piano interludes. Psychologically though, there is much more going on. Clearly unfazed by constructing a bigger, more audacious picture, Nidam links her many different artist desires on this album through cyclical electronic expressionism. The album is expansive. Disparate influences and eras are joined together through a subtle interplay of contrast and tone. The beats, repetition and some occasional fruity whistle stops make the journey absorbing and multi-dimensional.

Beginning with a down-tempo treat called On My Street, New Moon immediately captivates you. Worming its way through soft electro on Harmonious Funk (whose lyrics hint at a possible universal truth) it arrives at the quirky synthesizer jam, Trippin’ Over You. The following rolling bass-driven house of The Great Suspenders is a loose groovy bumper and perfect for those ever-so-serious after parties. Send A Pigeon then follows; with the album taking you down another unexpected corridor with Undermine – Sunday Sunday is its warm piano accompaniment.

Disco loops, filters, delays, and a gorgeous vocal then clash on the short and sweet Lies In Love. And then, once again, we find Nidam playing with juxtaposition. She throws the impending unease of Last Moon, its warped vocals and twisted syncopated beats, together with the beautiful drifting electronica of Boastful. Finally, Never Forever ends the album on a high note with perhaps a hint or an amalgamation of the album’s base ideals: freedom, truth, and the cyclical nature of change.

Ultimately, New Moon’s wide variety of sounds can be directly traced back to Nidam’s disjointed discography. As Miss Fitz, her sleazy hypnotic dance music has touched great European labels like Freak’n’Chic, Contexterrior and Circus Company, and she has also released reductionist woozy house as Laverne Radix on Oslo, its sub-label Love Letters From Oslo and Raum…Musik. It is under her birth name Maayan Nidam however, that she has arguably experimented the most, with releases on such diverse labels as Perlon, Powershovel Audio (who released Nidam’s debut album Night Long in 2009), and Wolf + Lamb.

The album is released on May 21st as the tour dates are packed for the summer.
