This weeks Sunday slow jam comes courtesy of J-Live. Last month he released his album S.P.T.A. (Said Person of That Ability) as Producer, MC, and DJ. A real triple threat who see’s help on the production front from Diamond D, RJD2, Nicolay, and Marco Polo. Make no mistake though, J-live’s own productions sit perfectly with the other producers in what is a timeless throw back with modern day lyrics.
The Stand out track ‘The Authentic’ (produced by Marco Polo) shows why J-live is regarded so highly by other Mc’s and his cult like following. His capability to throw a conversation effortlessly back and forth with himself is also something to be applauded. With lines likes “Yo your shit is crack/ in so much as that I never fucked with it and never will/ Never used, Never deal/ Never chopped, never cooked/ and I really don’t feel the appeal/ How he get a record deal, for real?” its no wonder S.P.T.A is a Long Player soon to be regarded as classic, you just haven’t realised it yet. Make sure you buy the album in its entirety from itunes, or any of the other big digital outlets/record stores.

Since my last post I have come to realise two things. Firstly that I can barely string a sentence together and secondly that my grammar was, for the most part, really. Terrible. So from now on I’m going to keep my posts like indiana jones sidekick, short and… round.

Take one dance music taste maker; Jesse Rose, add one of house music’s biggest rising stars; Oliver $, give them an acapella album from the 80′s, let them remix, edit and come up with some brand spanking new club jackers for the dancefloor, the result; the ‘Sample Pleasures’ mixtape! Being released for free download on the internet on march 1st.

The two will start touring the world in mid March, taking in the States, Canada, Europe and Asia, playing back to back, sometimes all-night long. Oliver $ has come up through the ranks after his first meeting with Jesse 7 years ago. The day they met Jesse declared that Ollie should be a resident on his brand new label at the time ‘made to play’.

The guys have collaborated many times together but this will be the first time the two have embarked on such a massive project that takes in over 8 tracks across 40 mins of mix. After the release of the mixtape, Play it Down will go on to release a number of tracks free on various online sites, whilst keeping the massive highlights for a double vinyl release at the end of march. Why? because as Olli puts it ‘we love making tracks & we love people to hear them’. Jesse say’s ‘I’ve been really into all the Hip-Hop Mixtapes coming out in America and felt it was time to give house fans the same love back’.

Caribou’s remix of Virgo Four’s ‘It’s a Crime’ is one of those tracks that’ll remind me of the summer of 2011.

One of the most impressive things about it is how briskly the eight minute run time zips by. It begins with a relatively simple almost ‘downtempo boogie’ vibe, but by the four minute mark you realise that everything that has preceded has been preparing you for an incredible drop filled with stabbing synth’s and a thumping kick drum.

Give it one listen through and there’s every chance it’ll hook you in like it has me…

I have to pay credit where it is due and thank Tom Austen from Urchins for this one. Like the grey album (Dangermouse’s mash up of The Beatle’s White Album and Jay-Z The Black Album) Wick-it has mashed up Big Boi and The Black Keys and with great effect. Normally I hate on Mash ups but i have to give this my seal of approval. Maybe its just because i’m a sucker for anything with Big Boi on the vocals… who knows, who cares, just enjoy.

Radio Slave – I Don’t Need A Cure For This (Kenny Larkin Remix) Download)
Radio Slave recently dropped ‘I Don’t Need A Cure For This’ and with it an incredible remix by Kenny Larkin. It builds and drops subtly, and with it creating atmosphere. The piano samples scattered through out add a hint of a jazzy trip hop, like that of the Herbaliser, but not enough that it gives way to its House groove. Such a good track! Buy the whole E.P. its well worth it.

Style of eye has been killing it over the past 7 years. Watching some of his sets over the years has left my mind a complete mess. How he does half the shit he does on 3 CDJ’s is beyond me, i swear he was doing stuff i never even knew possible, that or i was drunk from having such a good time. On top of him being an incredible DJ he’s one of the nicest guys i’ve met in the DJ world. So take a moment out of your life and have a listen to this remix of Sky Ferreira’s ‘One’ (the dub version as i can’t stand her vocals). Its no Big Kazoo but it’ll get the dance floor bouncing.

Oh Land – Sun of a Gun (Savage Skulls Remix) (Download)
Savage Skulls come with a poppy remix that uses the vocals from the original quite heavily. I can’t imagine ever hearing this out, but it’s been made to be like it is and doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t. For that reason alone its a guilty pleasure.

Shobaleader One – D’Demonstrator

Squarepusher has revealed the Debut album called ‘d’demonstrator’ will be released with 9 new tracks to add to that of their debut E.P. Cryptic Motion on Ed Banger. He has also revealed that they will be ready for a tour sometime next year and that he has been ‘in contact’ with Andre3000 from Outkast about possibly hooking up to create something. If you are wondering what, where, and who Shobaleader One are then please read on, as here are a few words from the man himself in a recent press release.

“Last summer a bunch of kids got in contact with me. They were talking about forming an ensemble, which I thought was a ridiculous idea but I was impressed by their perseverance so we met up. Their idea was that they wanted the ‘fantasy group’ I had written about in connection with [past Squarepusher album] Just A Souvenir to become a real entity that would record and tour. So we had a go at doing some recording and the story so far is documented on this record.”

“The overall aim is to articulate my music through the medium of a band. I always thought that a band would be a limiting thing. I’ve got very used to being able to make music by programming or playing without having to explain anything to anyone, and I assumed it would slow everything down if I had to. Actually it has made it quicker because I’m not trying to be four people simultaneously any more. I’m not over-explaining anything to them as they’ve got strong ideas of their own and I want to hear that in the final results.”

The video below shows a quick idea of the show, still probably pretty rough, but with a little imagination will be cool… thats if squarepushers own live shows are anything to go by.
