Action Bronson – Well Done

I’m not going to lie, when I was first introduced to Action Bronson I wasn’t sold. But the more i’ve heard from him, the more he’s grown on me. To the point I can’t stop listening to his ‘Well done’ album that was released back in November. Statik Selektah is on the Production and it shows, everything feels tighter. The beats are still true to Bronson’s style but with more depth and interest. Make sure you go buy the album digitally or hunt it down on import, this is a rapper that is really under rated.

I’m not going to lie here, I find this E.P. super cheesy. Its always cheesy vocals that ruin a track, and when did shit vocal piano house become cool again? Thankfully there’s a dub version which kind of saves the day. Go grab it here, or don’t, I couldn’t careless…

Because its Friday, here’s a Jamie Jones remix of People Get Real from back in 2008, when his music wasn’t so Ketamine’d out. It’s from the B-side of ‘People Get Real – Magic Bag’ EP.

CREAM

Written by . Filed under Hip Hop, House. Tagged , , , . No comments.

Claptone released the track ‘Cream’ a couple of weeks ago, and it samples The Charmels – As Long as I’ve Got You. Though to our generation its Wu-Tang Clans killer Hit ‘C.R.E.A.M’. How many times can a sample can be reused, changed, altered and progressed into different formats/styles/genres? Luckily for me, NPR Music had already thought of this years ago, and so the back story of the Sample is covered by them here.
Once you’ve read up on the adaptations of a song being sampled so heavily, think about what it could be sampled on. Claptone’s use of the sample has created a decent house track, but what would have happened if Skrillex had decided to use it? A classic sample to our generation ruined for a new generation? or is that what the older generation thought of the RZA’s production? (hard to believe). Either way, Claptone brings the sample to House nicely, and the sample continues on its journey… for now.

10 Hip Hop Valentine’s Day Tracks

Written by . Filed under Hip Hop. Tagged , , . No comments.

With various top 10/top 20 Valentines Day lists going on, its only right we jump into the love pool like an obese cupid dropping it heavy like a hippo (belly flopping).
First up has to be Outkast – Happy Valentines Day. If Andre3000 thinks ‘Cupid will not be defeated’, then i’m not going to argue. Unless, Mr.3000 keeps doing Gillette adverts and then I might.

112′s ‘only you’ got the badboy remix treatment back in the day. I was never a fan of BadBoy records, but I love Biggie, so check this smooth groove out.

112 Feat. Ma$e + Notorious B.I.G – Only you (Badboy Remix)

Heres a track that is always overlooked and relatively unknown by many. Boogie Monsters disappeared relatively easily (a shame) but their track ‘Honey Dips in Gotham’ remains high on my play list.

Cunninlynguists – Love ain’t (remix)

Not a Rap track, but incredible non the less. Why she is going out with P Diddy is beyond me though, even with his net worth of $450 Million…. ah.

The Roots Feat. Erykah Badu – You Got Me

Method Man and Mary J. Blige’s ‘I’ll be there for you’ is a remix of Method Man’s “All I Need” (which appears on his 1994 debut album Tical), with an interpolation of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s 1968 hit, “You’re All I Need to Get By”, with Mary J. Blige singing the choruses, and backing vocals. It also samples Notorious B.I.G’s ‘Me & My Bitch’…

Deadboy – Vday mix for Wifey

Written by . Filed under Mix. Tagged . No comments.

Today is getting all Valentine themed with Hudson Mohawk dropping his 5th Vday mix to date. This one is… well i’ll let their own blurb tell you more:
“On this day more than any other, everyone wants someone to be close to them. To tenderly caress them. And no touch could be sweeter than that of the most romantic selector we know – Deadboy. After all, who else has authored modern dancefloor staples as sublime and sensitive as ‘U Cheated’ and ‘If U Want Me’? Who else could have us welling up so, as he drops classic odes like ‘I Would Die 4 U’ next to such dewy-eyed bassline anthems as Mr Figz’s ‘Rain’?”.

This remix Package brings Hollis P Monroe’s ‘I’m Lonely’ out of 1998/99 and up to the present date. The EP Features 4 remixes from the likes of SIS, Laura Jones, and Larse, but its the Subb-an remix that kills it for me. If you haven’t heard the original then check it out above along with the Subb-an Remix below. Make sure you go pick up the remixes EP here

Huxley – Let it Go

Huxley’s just released this gem on Hypercolour. Its part of a two track EP called ‘Let it Go’ and the title track does wonders. The remix on the flip side is by Eats Everything is pretty nice too. Pick it up here

Whilst on the subject of Huxley, I feel the remix of Ethyl and Huxleys ’3 Feet High’ by Roman Flugal was overlooked upon its release. Its a Lovely early evening warm up track if ever i’ve heard one, and you’d be silly not to have it tucked away in your arsenal.

Sunday Slow Jam

This weeks Sunday Slow Jam takes it back, way back, to the disco days. This has probably been posted about 8 times already, but it’s such a classic I can’t risk it being overlooked. The whisper’s ‘and the beat goes on’ has it all; an incredible beat, groove, breakdown, and soul to it.
I’ve also thrown in an added bonus in the way of a Fugees ‘ready or not’ remix…. So here’s to a Happy Sunday you Roast Munching, sunday drinking, time wasting lay about. Enjoy…
