Not sure how I missed Azealia Banks track ’1991′. It was probably my hatred of hearing a Lazy Jay’s track from a couple of years ago being rehashed with some annoying lyrics all over it.
Anyway, 212 is a rant for another time, and this is neither the time nor the place. With ’1991′ I can’t help but feel that Miss Banks sounds a bit like Missy Elliot, which is never a bad thing, but Missy does Missy. Where she does come good however, is refreshing the bridge between rap and house music (not the horrible big room chart house that Guetta and Afrojack pump out) that used to be much more apparent back in the late 80′s/early 90′s.
So if we minus the hype, is there any real place for Azealia Banks right now? Well luckily she is decent live and has good stage presence, but needs a couple of years to develop into something that holds more stability than the hype train. Pick up the full 4 track EP here.
